The United States completely reinvented its economy when it entered World War Two. The changes were vast and rapid. I point this out because it proves we can do it. During World War I, the rapid establishment of home gardens was considered to be absolutely essential. The National War Garden Commission hoped to establish 1 million home gardens in the first year. A survey in 1918 determined that more than 5 million such gardens had been established.
